Police 5 bodies in rural Indiana

(CNN) — Indiana authorities continued searching for answers and urging vigilance on Monday, one day after finding five bodies at two addresses in rural Franklin County.

“There are persons that we are looking for, (but) we don’t have any idea where they are or what their mindset is,” Sheriff Ken Murphy told reporters Monday evening from Brookville.

Sgt. Jerry Goodin of the Indiana State Police noted there are not yet any “persons of interest” or suspects in the case. He added authorities couldn’t rule out that the shooter or shooters are among the dead, describing the probe as “a very fluid situation.”

“At this time, it’s completely open,” Goodin said of the investigation.

“The person or persons responsible for this crime are the only ones who can tell us the motive. They’re the only ones who know what happened.”

Authorities first got a call Sunday afternoon from people concerned about a small child wandering near the street along Stipps Hill Road near Laurel, in eastern Indiana about halfway between Indianapolis and Cincinnati, Ohio. Not seeing any adults around, some citizens stayed with the child until police arrived.

After “gaining more information” by talking with the child and neighbors, a Franklin County sheriff’s deputy requested help. That led to the discovery of a dead man in one address and four other fatalities — two males and two females — at an address across the street, Goodin said.

The state police sergeant said Monday night that “the child is safe,” declining to elaborate.

He added that the state medical examiner in Indianapolis had conducted autopsies on four of the five bodies found.

She had yet to positively identify all of them, said Goodin.

The state trooper said “some of the victims at the scene looked as though they had sustained gunshot wounds.” But he cautioned this does not mean, necessarily, that all those found dead had been shot — saying the medical examiner will likely make such a determination.

Both Murphy and Goodin stressed that law enforcement agents were “working around the clock” on the case. They urged people to call in tips or any information, with the sheriff predicting the public’s help “is going to solve this case.”

They also asked the public to be on alert, mindful those those responsible for the deaths could still be at large and dangerous.

“We should all be more vigilant than we normally are. This is a good reminder as to why,” said Murphy. “We’re just encouraging people to lock your doors, be vigilant, report any suspicious activity.

Readyset Battery Charger Could Change Rural Africa
There are over 500 million cell phone users worldwide. This is according to research by the GSMA, the international association of mobile operators. The problem with all those cell phones isnt access to a network. The problem is that most of the users in 3rd world countries live off the grid and cant charge the darn things. ReadySet, manufactured by Fenix International, San Francisco, California, may be the solution.

ReadySet Battery Charger Could Change Rural Africa

ReadySet may provide new businesses for entrepreneurs. Right now people have adapted cell phone car chargers to work directly connected to a car battery and are charging 25 cents a charge. The problem is that car batteries are dangerous. When used outside of a car, they often leak causing burns on users from the battery acid. The new ReadySet is designed to be rugged, as well as user friendly. According to an article written by Rob Goodier, InnovationNewsDaily, Fenixs lab testers dropped the battery onto concrete from three feet above, sprayed it with salt water, blasted it UV rays, ran it through thousands of cycles and it still stayed intact and leak free. ReadySet comes with USB and car charger ports. Although the cost of a new ReadySet is somewhat pricey (0) for people who typically only earn an average of per day, Fenix International is hoping that businesses will see this as an opportunity to expand their business. Some entrepreneurs may start new businesses. At 25 cents per charge, it wouldnt take long to pay for the device.

Fenix International believes the ReadySet could change Africas rural economy. According to Goodiers article, The device, its designers believe, could put more electricity in off-the-grid homes, create jobs, reduce indoor air pollution by replacing kerosene lanterns with LEDs, and eliminate car battery acid leaks. Plus, the telecom industry is hooked on it. Network carriers can make 10 to 14 percent more money from users who can keep their phones charged. Fenix International is testing the ReadySet in 10 African markets. Retail sales are set to begin in June, with the device coming to the developed countries within a year. If sales really take off, Lin predicts the price of the ReadySet will drop. It is not new for people to be paying to charge their cell phones in 3rd world countries. For the past several years people have congregated at the local battery charger, paying that precious 25 cents per phone charge. Now they will be able to charge other devices as well.

Building upon the existing culture was the inspiration for this solution, said Michael Lin, founder of Fenix. People in developing communities have a variety of needs, of course, but access to electricity is exciting in that it empowers people to improve their lives in a number of areas. Lin went on to say, Theres a lot of interest from people who want a green, carbon-neutral digital lifestyle. It might be a trickle-up innovation. You can hop on the bicycle and power all of your electronics.

Have you lost power because of the winter storms this year? Were you caught with low cell phone batteries? Wouldnt it have been great to be able to recharge your cell phone without electricity? I think this new device could change a lot of lives, both in 3rd world countries as well as here in the States. With devastating storms, floods and other natural disasters, this device could really help. I can even see people taking their ReadySet with them camping. Kudos to Fenix International!

Hunger & Poverty Continue to Affect Rural Areas

The Global Hunger Index features Bangladesh as a country with one of the highest hunger indexes in the world. Bangladesh is one of the most densely populated countries and also one of the poorest. A shocking 49 percent of the population lives below the national poverty line. Child malnutrition is the second highest in the world at 48 percent. The low social status of women in Bangladesh is one of the reasons why women and children continue to suffer from serious health and nutrition issues.

The northern regions of the country in particular face extreme poverty and frequently face food insecurity issues. Most of the populace is dependent on agriculture for their livelihood. Income and employment deficit is rampant in many rural areas where government welfare schemes are not implemented properly.

The primary source of income for a vast majority of the rural and semi-urban population is agriculture. Frequent floods and the vagaries of nature often result in failed or poor quality crops which result in practically zero income for these rural workers who are not skilled in any other job or profession.

The government does have schemes such as right to food and adequate healthcare. Article 15 of the Constitution states that the achievement of securing the basic provisions of life, including food and healthcare for its citizens is a fundamental responsibility of the State. There are multiple programs that focus on providing employment and support for those entrapped in the vicious cycle of poverty.

It is apparent from the conditions prevalent in the villages that much of these projects do not reach the parts of the population for whom the schemes were designed in the first place. Hunger and poverty continue to be the curse of these sections of the society.

A vast majority of the people living in rural areas, experience extreme poverty primarily because of failed crops. They depend heavily on agriculture to see them through for the rest of the year. When crops fail, they have absolutely no other means of sustenance. Food security issues and the need to have targeted assistance because of scarcity of essential services such as healthcare provisions and access to clean drinking water has seen matters go from bad to worse over the past few years.

Composting in Urban, Suburban, And Rural Households

Composting bins are designed to make the job of household composting easier. Composting is a terrific way to reduce your household’s waste, and it also makes soils more fertile, improves plant health and gardening yields, and even helps wildlife indirectly by keeping soil healthy. Composting is a natural process, and it happens to anything that used to be a living organism, as long as the right amounts of moisture and oxygen are present. Other, less flattering terms for the process include decomposition and biodegradation. Composting is helped along by organisms like fungi, bacteria, worms, and insects.

Composting your qualifying household waste is really easy, and plastic compost bins make the job very convenient. Your work basically amounts to throwing kitchen and garden waste into the composter and rotating it regularly. The resulting compost, or humus, enriches soils and can prevent the need for non-organic fertilizers.

The key to getting good humus is using a variety of types of waste, and ensuring adequate moisture and air. Rotating the compost, either by digging in the compost bin with a spade, or by using rotating compost bins helps the process along by adding air and separating out compacted layers.

While most of the composting activity takes place at whatever the ambient temperature is, if you have a big enough composter with enough material in it, the microbial activity will really get going, raising the temperature in the core of the compost to around 160 degrees Fahrenheit! This is hot enough to kill off harmful germs as well as weed seeds you don’t want to use on your garden.

The more shredded the waste material is, the faster it will compost, because more exposed surface area of waste products allows the decomposition to work faster.

The end result of composting is a dark brown substance that has a texture somewhere between that of sawdust and rich soil.

One thing you will notice if you regularly compost household waste is that much of the waste simply disappears. One reason for this is that a lot of kitchen waste has a high water content, and the water either drains off or evaporates. Also, the decomposition process releases some gases which dissipate into the air. Approximately 10 lbs. of kitchen waste are necessary to yield 1 lb. of compost.

But don’t think that if you have a small household that it’s “not worth it” to bother composting. For one thing, you can get very small compost tumblers, and even though you may only get 1 lb. of compost for 10 lbs. of waste, you’re still keeping 10 lbs. of kitchen waste out of the sanitation system. Plus, that 1 lb. of compost can make the difference between anemic houseplants and a lush indoor garden.

You can find compost bins for sale at hardware and home improvement stores, but the largest selection can be found online. It doesn’t matter if you grow your own food and have a large household, or if you have a household of one or two and live in an apartment. There is a compost bin that’s just the right size for your needs that will help you create amazing, free organic fertilizer and keep plenty of household out of the municipal waste stream.

You do not how it always happens, but it does. Your job, that is your office in this matter, always gives you the shortest notification on your travelling business. So you need to book those last minute flights, which are rare to find just to speak of the case. But a job is a job and you must do it no matter what.

It, however, is quite a fortunate turn of event for you for there is this company which specifies in all of this ‘last minute’ business. Flying somewhere almost always requires a place to stay after landing, and if it is last minute fly that you have, you need also last minute accommodation to stay with. If you contact the right company, however, all of this short notice problem will be handled in the most trusted way.

The reason for your not being so worry having the last minute trip is that of expansive network this company has been building, and continues to do so. If you want to fly domestic with the specific airplane, qantas for instance, you get yourself the right company to book with. Even if this is a specific international flight that you require, such as the singapore airlines, you definitely have booked the right company all along.

Solar PV Systems and Rural Solutions

There are a number of ways in which we can use the natural sources of energy in modern life. However, rural life has no less a requirement for energy. There are various ways in which Photovoltaic solar systems can be put to use in rural purposes. Today, cheap fossil fuels like diesel and coal are still more important for rural needs. In Asian countries, developments have been made to ensure that the remotest of villages where electricity still a rare luxury, polycrystalline solar panels are used to bring a new light to homes. Both China and India have the perfect geographical resources and technological development to make this a reality. This is why in an age of Asianism, India is the second highest producer of electricity from raw sunlight, while energy giant BP is moving its solar projects to China.

Street Lighting in Villages

Rural lighting is perhaps one of the most difficult issues that development authorities faced.

In far flung areas, getting cables and electricity wires across was a huge problem. This is why companies began foraying into making multi crystalline solar modules into street lamps. In any urban situation, there are far too many sky scrapers to allow continual sunlight exposure to the panels. This is why solar PV modules are used more in villages than cities. In any village, there is neither the hindrance of shade from high buildings, nor the risk of theft and wanton damage to the panels. Street lamps are instilled with systems to absorb sunlight through the day and light up the dark roads at night using stored power.

Home Electricity Supplies

Many villages in India and China still do not have any reliable electricity supply.

According to official records they do have access, but rarely get to see their bulbs light up dark nights. Many international, government and NGO bodies are working towards making Solar PV systems more popular and available in such distant villages. With self supporting electricity generation units at home, every household has their own domestic supply from small photovoltaic solar systems.

Poultry Farming

Poultry farming requires a lot of electricity consumption. This is because the birds need heat from high power bulbs. Eggs are also often hatched in incubators instead of naturally for faster production. Solar PV modules are producing the necessary electricity and supplying the necessary power. With this free and new system of electricity production, farmers are able to save huge sums in the maintenance and breeding process. This is why Solar PV Systems are quite popular among farmers.

Multi crystalline solar modules are vital for rural development today. As we are seeking infrastructural development, we cannot deny nature her space. Rural areas are the lungs that feed oxygen to a place, not cities. This is why involving eco-friendly sources of power for ecologically beneficial places are vital for mankind’s progress. Polycrystalline Solar Panels are now the world’s best bet to achieve this mammoth feat. As we move towards a better future with more eco-friendly developmental solutions, adopting solar energy is slowly becoming even more mandatory.

HK Chaudhary (photovoltaic modules manufacturer) often writes about issues concerning eco-friendly technology and its development.

Using Federal Funds for Rural Internet Service

A rural community is defined as one with less than 10,000 residents, and this is where the United States is seeing the fastest growing market for broadband penetration. In fact, between the second quarter of 2007 and the second quarter of 2009, rural areas have seen a 16% increase in the amount of broadband services being available. Despite this growth, however, broadband penetration of 75% in rural regions remains well below the national average of 89%. However, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is dedicating millions of dollars to bringing rural areas up to par with the rest of the country.

While there are some larger companies such as Comcast and AT&T laying new internet connections in rural regions, most of the time it is smaller companies who are able to provide these regions service. Rural high speed internet is more cost efficient for residents this way so companies such as Cincinnati Bell, PenTeleData, Mediacom and Bresnan Communications are leading the charge into rural areas. However, the only way that they can also do so in a cost effective manner is to have some additional funds courtesy of the federal government.

The only problem with the federal stimulus has been trying to figure out how to divide it in order to provide rural internet service to the most people and do the most good. Out of the billion available to help spread high speed connections among the rural, poor and other various regions, there have been billion in requests for that money. These requests are coming from groups and communities throughout the country as there are many regions that see a need to be connected to the rest of the online world.

For example, the Coeur d’Alene Indian Tribe in Idaho is requesting .2 million for a ring of fiber optic lines that could connect up to 3,500 homes on just one side of its rural reservation which is about half the size of the state of Rhode Island. The tribe foresees all types of uses for the fiber lines including distance learning and allowing more members an opportunity to connect to its video-sharing web site which features clips of powwows and tutorials of tribal elders speaking in their native language.

Another region which could benefit from rural high speed internet service is in the Appalachians. This region is known as one of the poorer spots in the country, but one company is trying to change that. The nonprofit internet provider, Mountain Home Information Network wants to expand a wireless network in Asheville, North Carolina and several in rural mountain communities. A sister nonprofit is also hoping to install fiber optic lines that will connect the network to the internet. As a result, both are looking for tens of millions of dollars from the federal stimulus to help make rural high speed internet in these regions a reality and help bring the outside world in.
